last birthday party of the year

zhiling's birthday party was awesome. i'm lazy to go into details and upload numerous photos so i've decided to do it hollywood style. because her party was gossip-girl-inspired, i caught a good few whose fashion sense have captivated me...and some friends who've made me laugh out loud with their dressings. excluding the lovely birthday girl, here're my top favourites (not in any order)

proudly brought to you by: zhiling (chairperson), sky and alex (personal assistants), ellyne (official photographer), rafiq and keith (media assistants), dehong (official videographer), jasper and co (official sponsors), SMU Treehouse Cafe (official venue)

fashionistas...OR NOT! )

and since this is the last party i'm attending this year, i have a self-centred confession: i actually hate attending birthday parties unless it's my own or i'm involved in the "main committee" (which is why this is one of those parties i enjoyed a lot). there's too much sitting around being socially retarded until the cake is cut. i'm ashamed to say i ponned many birthday parties this year, and sometimes even prayed i will not be invited. but i don't like being the host either because entertaining so many people sucks your dry.

so...i don't know how to conclude my thoughts except that...this is why i'm kinda worried about the next big parties in my life: wedding, baby shower, baby's first month yada yada

confessions of a young singapore auntie

i've been an MRT girl all my life because my family believes in staying near MRT stations for convenience sake. but god knows how much i hate taking the MRT and i wish everyday my dad will come to his senses and buy me a car. everyone has their own reasons for hating public transport. for me, it's not about the long time taken to reach my destination. in fact, i rather like listening to my ipod on long rides. it's about seats.

i have a confession: i'm a lazy bitch and i absolutely detest sitting on long train rides without a seat. in fact, it's rather rare that i do not get a seat on trains. the world of rush-hour MRT is also survival of the fittest. if you are a train commuter, you would also would term me as a "seat predator". 15 years of taking MRT has taught me how to grab a seat before everyone else:

1) stand the nearest to the train door when the train arrives.
2) run the fastest when the train door opens, especially if there're few empty seats and many passengers waiting.
3) if you still can't get a seat, stalk people. stand in the middle of the two rows and constantly watch them. you can always tell if they're ready to alight if they start clutching their belongings as soon as the next station is announced.
4) open up your senses especially at the interchanges because many people will alight e.g. raffles place, dhoby ghaut.

what i cannot stand is how the other commuters react towards me. hey, i'm VERY ethical. if you want to give up your seat for an elderly or pregnant woman, i would NEVER jump at that oppurtunity. if the person you "stalked" gets up to leave, the seat goes to you and i would NEVER fight with you for it (except perhaps give you envious gazes)

but come on. don't give me an ugly stare when i rush to sit at a seat i spotted. just the other day, someone stood up to leave in a crowded MRT. there was an auntie beside her and amazingly, she didn't want to sit (even after 3 minutes) so i just walked over to take the seat instead, plugged on my ipod and enjoyed the train ride. but she started shooting me glares for the entire ride. hell, if she wanted to sit, she should've done it before me.

by the way, the middle-aged and elderly in singapore can be such divas on MRTs. sometimes i suspect they want to be asked to sit down by kind young people. but i'm no such person. if you're not taking it, i will. i'm also a pragmatic, practical and hate-beating-about-the-bush girl and i will not  "read" your mind (like how i do for stupid lit books for the past few years)

seriously, i'm not sorry for my kiasu behaviour. MRTs are PUBLIC GOODS so anyone can have it if they get it first. i don't even mind long train rides and sardine-squashed passengers at peak hours.  all i ask for is a seat. if i worked for it with streetwise skills i've picked up over 15 years, then i deserve it. period.

If you ask me what's the biggest regret in my life, it would be my lack of courage to defy my parents, and pursue vocal studies after 'O' levels instead of being boring like everyone else and study Science.

But I guess I've been "compensated" in many other ways.

I have Jeanette darling and my tennis darlings from IJC, and I've met some fantastic people in NYP. (:

Even so (I shall be contradictory and say), sometimes when I think back, I wonder where would I be right now.

Toodlex! <3

DSLR my love

let's just say i'm ultra-annoyed because uploading photos took so long so i decided that i should just update someday when i'm at office and when i don't have work. maybe tomorrow lah when i finish my flowchart.

anyway, the weekend has been fantastic. the highlight of the week was, i finally bought my DSLR. oh the professionals would laugh because it's only a canon 1000D but still, i'm very proud because i painfully saved for this. it took 6 months because i'm so incredibly spendthrift these days. plus, i'm someone who believes in investing in lenses more than the body.

i've snapped pictures over the last few days but this is my favourite (taken by dh). the bridge at stadium waterfront lighted at night. the colours are so amazingly brilliant!

in other news, my articles got published (except i really need my pay because the kate spade is a-coming) so my portfolio got beefed up by quite a bit :) i also bought my (very first) head dress for Z's party and received my long awaited red dress. quite excited because another one's coming next week heee :D

and ta-da. the weekend passed so quickly sigh. work has been so tiring that i can't seem to get excited for my exchange!

ain't it sad?

so here's a bit about work: i'm interning in my aunt's company in the HR department(because my aunt is the head of that department and her family's in the board of directors). so trust me, it's very true that in the working world, your contacts matter more than your qualifications.

my job basically, is to draft out the human resource manual on procedures for recruitment, orientation, training and remuneration for the managers. so that in future, they don't have to waste time training new HR workers as they can learn from the manual. but because my aunt and her family are overseas now, i don't really have much work to do this week. plus, my supervisor is going for holiday this friday. so, even lesser things to do.

work is monotonous, as always. in the past 2 days, i've been staring at a word document, thinking hard about how to communicate procedures better. every one and a half hours, i make a trip to the toilet and pantry because the glare of the computer hurts my eye. the toilets are clean and they have a coffee machine with 5 different types of coffee. so great! caffeine is the key to keeping me awake and productive. but despite the bore, i actually like what i do in a morbid way. it combines two of my best talents: organization theory and communication.

i dread travelling to work because i have to wake up at 7am (and i haven't done that since JC). plus, the office is at a very ulu place in singapore. nevertheless, it's a huge office which overlooks the sea (and ships and cranes, so it's not as romantic as you think). plus, there is a van to fetch us to and from the nearest MRT. and the van also sends us to different places to dabao lunch everyday.

when i get home, i'm always dead tired. all i want to do is sleep. but i always get carried away chatting online or doing up my europe blog.

and i'm going to stop because it's sounding more and more like answers to a job interview. my favourite past time is counting down to 5.45pm and counting down to TGIF! today, i'll be counting down to the moment i reach home and take a power nap. then, wake up and it's club hopping and mambo with my favourite girls.
